Consumer Unit Upgrades Across Reading & Berkshire

Your consumer unit — also known as a fuse board or fuse box — is the control centre of your property's electrical system. If yours is outdated, it may not provide the protection your home or business needs. SEB Electrics Ltd upgrades consumer units across Berkshire to modern, RCD-protected units that meet current BS 7671 wiring regulations and keep your property safe.

What Is a Consumer Unit?

A consumer unit is the box that houses your circuit breakers and fuses. It distributes electricity from the main supply to the individual circuits throughout your property — and protects each circuit in the event of a fault or overload. Modern consumer units use Residual Current Devices (RCDs) and Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) to provide enhanced protection against electric shock and fire. Older units — particularly those with rewirable fuses — offer significantly less protection.

Types of Consumer Unit We Install

Standard Consumer Unit A modern split-load consumer unit with RCD protection and MCBs — suitable for most domestic properties.

High Integrity Consumer Unit Dual RCD protection with additional surge protection — recommended for properties with sensitive electrical equipment or where maximum protection is required.

AFDD Consumer Unit Arc Fault Detection Device protection — the highest level of protection available, detecting dangerous arc faults before they can cause a fire. Now required in certain applications under the 18th Edition wiring regulations.

Our engineers will recommend the most appropriate unit for your property and budget.

What Our Customers Say

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How long does a consumer unit upgrade take?

A standard upgrade typically takes 4–6 hours. Your power will be off for the duration of the work.

Will I lose power during the upgrade?

Yes — your electrical supply will be isolated while the new unit is installed. We aim to complete the work in a single visit.

Do I need a new consumer unit for an EV charger?

Not always — but in some cases, a new circuit and consumer unit upgrade will be required. We'll assess this as part of the EV charger survey.

Is a consumer unit upgrade notifiable?

Yes. Consumer unit upgrades must be notified to Building Control. As a NAPIT registered company, we handle this on your behalf.
